Anna Karenina

2012, 122m

A gaudy, slow, hard to finish, stylized version which neither adds to one's insight into the book, nor stands on its own. Even the tragic end is presented in a mechanical, gimmicky way.

It lacks the emotional punch required for its tragic melodrama, but it is admirable at least in technical aspects, and I cared a bit about the supporting characters. I think it will be remembered as an interesting attempt.

Mr Ebert once remarked its a miracle any movie ever gets made at all, considering the massive inputs of people, talent and resources it requires. So it seems heartless to say negative things about--snarkiness. I must say I hurried through this and was glad to reach the end. Curiosity to see how the climactic scene was done was one thing that kept me going.
