I was very taken by the first, Baran, specially being awestruck by the grandeur and beauty of the landscape and the simplicity of the mountain folk. It was the first movie from Iran I had seen.

The next two, Willow Tree and Color of Paradise were disappointing, since they seemed very sentimental, and seemed more like a tourist brochure.

I have written about all three hereabout.S M Rananoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8453503290491393866.post-69218225019240141702010-03-21T00:01:24.511+05:302010-03-21T00:01:24.511+05:30Close Up is one of the most interesting films I...Close Up is one of the most interesting films I've seen. Most Kiarostami ones are slow and sleep-inducing, but you end up liking them after they're over.
Makhmalbaf, for some reason, I couldn't quite warm to as much. His Gabbeh and Moments of Innocence stand out though. His entire family is into film-making, but I've far lesser opinion of the rest's abilities as film-makers.

PS: You should see Majid Majidi's Children of Heaven if you haven't already.vivekhttp://ratnam.wordpress.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8453503290491393866.post-39218935728870491772010-03-20T13:20:08.809+05:302010-03-20T13:20:08.809+05:30Actually my own image of Iran till I saw these few...Actually my own image of Iran till I saw these few movies was a hotch-potch of absurd stereotypes. I've rather become fond of it since it gives me quite a homely feeling because of the similarity of landscape and people's somewhat laid back personalities to some parts of India, particularly North India's sub Himalayan terrain. The theocracy as it comes out in Kiarostami's movies seems mild and benign.S M Rananoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8453503290491393866.post-81318717307851761572010-03-20T00:35:24.590+05:302010-03-20T00:35:24.590+05:30Sounds like an interesting director. The difference between them and most Western countries concerns their government. Theirs is a theocracy masquerading as a democracy, while America's (and other Western governments) is a democracy masquerading as a three-ring circus. ;-)Greg Salvatorehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00730593838362270359noreply@blogger.com
